Best Things To Do In Shibuya: Tokyo’s Epicenter Of Modern Japanese Culture

Shibuya is known as having the world’s busiest (and most likely well-known) pedestrian crossing. In fact, it is probably the first thing you think of when Shibuya comes to mind.

However, there is more to this area of Tokyo than that. When exiting Shibuya Station, you’ll be faced with Shibuya Center-Gai.

Best Things To Do In Shibuya: Tokyo's Epicenter Of Modern Japanese Culture

These streets are famous for being the epicenter of music, fashion and all-round entertainment.

If you are interested in modern Japanese culture, you will definitely find it here.

With so many backstreets and side alleys, you will be forgiven for getting lost – but that is the beauty of exploring this part of Japan.

If you are wondering what to do first once you set foot in Shibuya, then you have come to the right place. Here we shall take a look at the best things to do in Shibuya.

Visit The Dog, Hachikō

Opposite the station you may see a crowd of people taking photos of a statue. This statue is of a dog called Hachikō.

The story goes that a dog would wait for his guardian to arrive home via the station every single day. Even after his guardian’s death, he continued waiting in the exact same place until he went on to die.

The statue is said to be the spot where Hachikō sat and waited for his guardian.

This statue is also a really popular meeting place too. However, still be prepared to struggle to find your friend or partner among lots of other people waiting.

Shop In Shibuya 109

If you love fashion, then you will want to check out Shibuya 109. It is hard to miss due to its bright silver color and unique shape – oh, and the words ‘109 Shibuya’ which is adorned on the outside.

Known locally as Shibuya ichi-maru-kyuu, this place is heaven for anyone who wants to shop for clothes.

It has floors upon floors of different boutiques selling clothes. If you are looking for makeup and beauty, then you will want to head to the basement.

Don’t be surprised if the women who work in these stores are shouting for your attention – it is just what they do. It all adds to the experience.

If you are looking for the men’s version, you will find 109 MENS close by. While smaller, it has some fantastic finds inside.

Check Out Tokyu Hands

If you are looking for some unique finds, then Tokyu Hands is the place to go. It has plenty of Japanese items that include both DIY and homeware.

There are several floors too which show off the different innovations and designs that come straight from Japan.

You might find some fantastic gifts too, as well as souvenirs to take home with you.

Listen To Japanese Music In Tower Records

While the rest of the world moves forward in terms of listening to music digitally, Tower Records is all about CDs. However, there is something special about walking through the doors of Tower Records.

Not only is it a bright yellow shop full of many floors, but it is the place to go for Japanese music. If there is a particular Jpop or Jrock band that you love, then you will find their discography here.

You will also find a collection of magazines too, from Japanese publications to international names.

There is also the chance to listen to new releases using headphones. Just click on the track you want to hear and off you go.

Enjoy Izakaya All Night Long

If you are looking to enjoy Shibuya’s nightlife, you may want to indulge in the concept known as izakaya. It is all about ordering drinks alongside small dishes.

While that sounds relatively normal, it is something you do in a steady fashion throughout the night.

It is often something which is enjoyed along with friends or colleagues. It is not a serious thing either. It is a time to relax and enjoy the company.

Taking part in izakaya is a really good way to sample the culinary delights that Japan has to offer. You may also have the chance to spend time with locals too.

While Japan is often known for being polite, everyone loosens up during izakaya. This is a great way to really get to know Japan and its people.

Visit Many Local Stores

Visit Many Local Stores

While we have mentioned other stores to visit above, there are many more to check out.

From the Disney Store (which has themed rooms and floors), to the high fashion Parco department store and Hikarie – the latter being a mall which has a great view over Shibuya.

If you are a big fan of Line and Friends, then you will be excited to visit the official shop which has lots of gift ideas. There is also the Pokemon Center too, which shouldn’t be missed.

Eat Some Delicious Sushi

One of the things you will notice about Shibuya is its amount of international and recognizable restaurants. In between these world famous chain food outlets are Japanese places to eat.

One of the things all tourists to Shibuya must try out is a sushi conveyor belt restaurant. Also known as kaiten sushi, they offer fun, entertainment and delicious food all in one place.

When you visit, you pick your food off a screen and wait for it to arrive. It is fun, often budget friendly and a very novel way to eat – and that is why you should try it out.

Visit Japan’s Biggest Don Quijote

While we would not normally suggest visiting a department store, there is something special about going to Don Quijote. This store sells all the food you will need if you are looking to self-cater while in Japan.

It also sells different goods too, and is great if you are on a tight budget.

However, the special thing about the Don Quijote in Shibuya is that it is also known as a ‘mega’ store due to it being the biggest one in Japan.

It is also open 24 hours, and is a great place to go if you are looking to buy drinks and snacks on a budget. You may also find Japan exclusive pop culture items too, such as Pokemon themed drinks.

Pictures are not usually allowed in this store (you will see the sign). However, you can photograph your bought items outside.

There is something about Japanese packaging that makes a photograph instantly cooler- this is despite it only being a packet of ramen.

While you are in Mega Don Quijote, look out for the reduced item section too! There are tasty bargains to be had.

Enjoy Japan’s Arcades

One of the things you don’t want to miss out on when visiting Shibuya is the arcades. It is a suitable place for both adults and children.

You will find a number of classic arcade games. These include shooting, retro, fighting and rhythm style games.

You may also see people in these arcades who are highly skilled at a particular game such as the rhythm style. Often during the evening you may see a group of people watching those who are doing well at the rhythm games.

While arcades do take 100 yen coins, there are machines that will exchange money.

Another thing to try out is the purikura booths. These are like photo booths, however you edit yourself to look overly cutesy. Think big eyes, smooth skin and sparkle effects. It is a fun souvenir to keep.

People Watch At The Pedestrian Crossing

Also known as the Scramble Crossing, this area is likely to be the busiest in Shibuya. You will want to get a number of pictures and videos at this very famous crossing.

You may wonder why this area is so amazing to see, however it is difficult to put into words. It has an atmosphere that is indescribable. As soon as you exit Shibuya station, you will see the crossing in front of you.

You will hear the music and see all the advertisements showing the different products and the latest Jpop. These billboards surround the entire crossing.

If you want a good view, then you will want to sit in the Starbucks that overlooks the Scramble Crossing. While it does get busy, the best place to get a view is with a window seat.

Also, don’t forget to walk across the crossing to experience it fully.

Final Thoughts

Shibuya is a powerhouse when it comes to entertainment in Tokyo. From quirky places to shop and great food to eat, to people watching and checking out the local traditions.

There are just so many things to do in this part of the world. While we have listed a few things to do in Shibuya, there are still plenty more places to go and see.

The next time you are in Shibuya Center-Gai, what sort of things will you get up to? Whatever it is, no doubt it will be a unique experience.
