If you’ve ever watched the popular anime ‘Naruto,’ or ‘Naruto: Shippuden,’ then you’re likely to know that the main character loves ramen.
There are few shows in recent history that have done as much for a specific type of food as Naruto has for traditional ramen in the west.
Naruto loves several bowls of ramen after a long day of being a ninja, and the way it is animated within the show is enough to make anybody want to join him.
But how exactly do you make ramen from Naruto? If you’ve ever wondered how you can make your very own Ichiraku style Ramen, then you’ve come to the right place!
In this article, we’re going to be taking you through everything you’ll need to know about how to make an authentic bowl of ramen that would make even the most lovable, knuckle-headed ninja’s mouth water.
We’ve included some additional information about ramen in case you’re new to this traditional Japanese dish in general.
What Is Ramen?
Okay, so let’s start with the basics. Ramen is a type of Japanese noodle soup, typically made from a rich, meat-based broth, noodles of varying size, meat, and lots of different vegetables.
Ramen is a popular dish in Japan, with noodle bars all across the country allowing you to quickly drop in and get a bowl without much of a wait.
There are hundreds of different types of ramen, and the kind you’ll find in Japan will differ depending on the location you find yourself in.
That said, ramen almost always consists of broth and noodles. Although the process has been streamlined so that you can get ramen quickly, some aspects of making ramen can take a long time.
This is usually because traditional ramen broths require a lot of time and attention.
What Is The Type Of Ramen Naruto Eats In The Anime?
The kind of ramen that you see within Naruto comes from the Ichiraku Ramen Shop, a noodle bar in the Hidden Leaf Village which is Naruto’s favorite place to eat in the entire world.
He often stops there between missions or as a celebration with his team and mentors. But what type of ramen, exactly, is it that Naruto always buys?
Well, Naruto typically goes for Tonkotsu-based ramen, which is a ramen whose broth is derived from pork. Pork broth is a very common base for ramen but unfortunately rather difficult to make in its traditional form.
It’s very likely Naruto gets what is known as Miso Chashu Pork Ramen, consisting of noodles, green onions, shasu pork and green onions.
It’s also often topped with a narutomaki – a small, cured type of fish paste with a striking pink spiral in its center – and this is where the character actually gets his name from.
How To Make Naruto Ramen
In this section, we’re going to be teaching you how to make this kind of ramen.
Ingredients
- Soy Sauce
- Green Onion
- Pork Bones
- Ramen Noodles
- Bok Choy
- Narutomaki (for extra authenticity).
- Chashu Pork
- Miso Paste
Step 1 – Broth
The first thing we’ll have to look at is probably the most difficult part, which involves making our pork-based broth. Traditionally, this is done with pork bones, which if you’re in the west can be difficult to get ahold of.
They are however the most important feature of this recipe that will make the ramen taste authentic.
Add bones, ginger and water into a pot. Allow this all to boil. One thing you’re going to need to do is make sure you strain off any debris that might float to the top.
You then are going to want to leave this to simmer for 5-6 hours. You can add extra water if you need to. Once it’s done, strain the broth to remove all of the bone and anything else left over.
Step 2 – Miso
Add miso to the broth and let it simmer for around 15 minutes.
Now you’re going to want to add in soy sauce and a little bit of sugar if you have it. From here you can begin to taste your broth, and add in anything else that you may want.
Step 3 – Chashu Pork
Next up we’re going to want to make our Chashu pork. First up you’re going to want to season the slice of pork you have with salt and anything else you want to add.
Heat olive oil in a pan and add the pork, browning it on each side for around 5 minutes. Now you can slowly add your broth to the pork and allow it to thicken and the pork to cook.
Step 4 – Vegetables & Toppings
From here you can start to prepare your vegetables. We recommend slicing the green onions and Bok Choy fine and chopping the narutomaki into small slices.
From here, you can cook your noodles and strain them before adding them to the bottom of a bowl.
Step 5 – Put It All Together
One thing to note here is that most of the toppings sit on the very top of the soup. We would recommend first placing your noodles, then adding some broth so that it just covers them.
Next up, add your greens. After that, add the slices of pork on top. And then finally add the Narutomaki as a final touch.
If you need some extra broth just ladle a little bit over the top.

So there you have it! Whilst we might not have the real secrets of how to make authentic Ichiraku Ramen, the recipe above should be fairly close to the original recipe that Naruto himself would enjoy.
Learning to make ramen can take a long time, with the broth being the most difficult section.
